Coweta weathers winter storm

Coweta County’s first winter storm of the season Thursday morning left the schools closed, but spared most of the county any severe damage.

The trace of snow blew into the county shortly before daybreak, and left some of the roads icy, which prompted the Coweta County School System to close the schools.

“We had people out early all morning driving the roads. In some cases, there was a quarter-inch of ice on the roads in the northern part of the county,” said school system public information officer Dean Jackson.

Jackson said the school system has three snow days built into the schedule, so the students won’t have to make up the day, but the employees will, he added.

Throughout the rest of the county, damage was minimal. Coweta County public information officer Tom Corker said the Sheriff’s Department worked some accidents early Thursday morning, but said the roads were clear by mid-morning.

“There were parts of the county, near Carroll County, that got a little more precipation than the rest of the county,” Corker said.

The wintry blast was expected to be short-lived, though, with temperatures tomorrow expected to be near 60 degrees.
