No debate as PTC Council approves 5 for DAPC board

With no discussion, no debate and barely a quorum, the City Council gave Peachtree City’s beleagured Development Authority a whole new look Thursday, voting to approve the appointment of five new members to the seven-person board.

New councilmembers Stuart Kourajian and Judi-ann Rutherford voted with Mayor Steve Brown in endorsing the recommendations of a candidate’s committee, which included Brown, City Manager Bernard McMullen, Councilman Murray Weed and one of the two remaining DAPC board members, Bill Bexley.

With the ongoing discrimination lawsuit filed against the authority by his wife still unsettled, Councilman Steve Rapson abstained from the issue. Weed was absent from Thursday’s meeting.

The five new members represent a cross-section of interests and the community, Brown said, disputing claims that the seven that now occupy the board are his own hand-picked appointees.

Of the seven members of the DAPC board when Brown took office in January 2002, two have died and five others resigned for various reasons. The most recent resignation was acting chairman Robert Brooks, effective Feb. 17.

Joining Bexley and returning member Scott Formel, the new Development Authority members include:

• Steve Fraas, a 6-year resident who works for BellSouth, through Feb. 2008.

• Todd Strickland, a Peachtree City resident since 1975 whose family owns Historical Concepts, through Feb. 2008.

• David Miller, a resident of the city for 14 years, former business consultant, through Feb. 2008.

• Stephen Savage, a six-month resident who works for Gardner-Denver Corporation, through April 2007.

• Tyler Duffy, an 11-year Peachtree City resident and Delta Air Lines flight officer, through April 2005.

In other business Thursday, the council:

• Named Stephen D. Ott as the cityÅfs Judge Pro Hoc, providing backup to Judge Maxwell when heÅfs unavailable to preside over city court, and to provide 72-hour hearings for city prisoners held at the Fayette County Jail.

• Approved an alcohol license application for SofellaÅfs Grill and amended the city ordinance allowing the privately-run Ashland Grille restaurant at the cityÅfs Tennis Center to obtaIn an alcohol license.

• Honored Robert Buckley for his service on the cityÅfs Planning Commission and recognized Cindy Light and Marilyn DeLoose as employees of the month for January.
