Senoia officials looking for sewer construction finish date

Senoia city administrator Murray McAfee huddled with contractors and officials from Georgia Rural Development yesterday to try and get a handle on when the city’s sewer system will be completed.

For the last few months, the East Coweta town has been a sea of mud as sewer contractors lay pipes and build lift stations. During Monday’s City Council meeting, McAfee told the council that nearly 35 percent of the pipes had been laid in the city, while nearly 83 percent of the spray field construction was complete.

“We’re having a frank discussion about when we can expect to see this project completed,” he said.

The project reminds on schedule, as far as cost goes, but McAfee said the progress has been hindered by some very large, unforeseen obstacles. The first line that was supposed to be completed was the Martinwood subdivision, just off Rockaway Road.

But as the contractors have discovered, the area is laden with rock, and they’re having to rethink their approach to the area.

“They’re talking about running a line in a different area to try and get away from all the rock they have run into,” McAfee said.

While the project has run into problems in Martinwood, the news from other areas of the city is far more positive. McAfee said the contractors have had success with running the Clark Street line, and that line could be hooked up in just over a month.

The city administrator hoped to come out of yesterday’s meeting with a better feel for the timeline on hooking up other areas of the city. The city’s ordinance gives residents 90 days to hook up to the system, after it’s completed in their neighborhood.

After the 90 days, residents will have to pay a tap-on fee.
