Commission approves beer license, while deflecting ethics charges

The Palmer Course at Starr’s Mill received its beer and wine license last week, but not before two commissioners denied any ethical problems in voting on the issue.

The course’s owner, John Boykin, had requested a change in ownership on the license and the issue appeared at the Fayette County Commission meeting Thursday.

After the request was announced, Commissioner Linda Wells told the audience that she maintained a “professional relationship” with the course’s owner, but had consulted the county’s attorney on whether she could vote on the issue.

Since she only made just over $100 from the organization in her capacity as a financial advisor, Wells was told she was not violating any ethics code.

Commission chairman Greg Dunn also reiterated that he was not in any violations of the county’s ethics code, either.

“I’m just on the board of trustees. I don’t receive any compensation,” he said.

The change in ownership passed the commission unanimously. The nonprofit business was formerly known as Whitewater Country Club.

In other news, the commission deferred voting on the county’s annual recreation contract with Peachtree City. For years, the county has been paying the city $125,000 per year. The contract allows county residents to use Peachtree City’s recreation facilities.

The vote was deferred because the commissioners had just received copies of the contract and did not have enough time to study it.
