Recipe contest lets young cooks cash in

Seventh- and eighth-graders with a culinary bent can win partial scholarships to Johnson & Wales University culinary school in Rhode Island, as well as other prizes, in the Healthy Heritage Recipe Contest. The competition seeks original, healthful recipes that reflect someone’s heritage. Students can enter on their own, or with the help of a parent or teacher. Entry deadline is March 26; registration forms are online at healthykidschallenge.com/ recipe.html. For more information, call 888-259-6287. The national competition is sponsored by Johnson & Wales and Healthy Kids Challenge, an organization that promotes healthful lifestyles for children.

Clean slices

Reynolds Plastic Wrap is replacing its serrated foil cutter with an “EZ Slide” plastic strip (right) that uses a zipper-like action. Even skeptics admitted that it neatly cuts the wrap without leaving you holding a crumpled ball of plastic. The new packaging will be available in clear and colored wrap in 50- and 100-square-foot rolls over the coming months.

Sweet site offers retro delights

If you want to put your paws on some colored M&M’s, here you go.

Candy Favorites’ candy shop (www.candyfavorites.com) offers them in batches of retro colors such as aqua green and cream. You’ll be impressed by the price of chocolate when you get to the checkout. Seventy bucks will get you a 10-pound bag of one color, but shipping is free.

There is a candy for every occasion — birth announcements, weddings, anniversaries, holidays, party treats, patriotic candy, edible insects, fund-raising candy and concession candy.

We like the Retro Packs with candy that has survived the decades — Jujubes, Lemonheads, Atomic Fireballs, Bazooka, Candy Lipstick, Pixy Stix, Pop Rocks, Smarties, Sugar Babies, Wax Lips and Zots, to name a few.

Diet Coke makers squeeze some limes

For people who like cola with a twist, there’s nothing like the real thing — a slice of lemon or lime. Now there’s Diet Coke with Lime, the latest in the Coke lineup.

It tastes fresh and clean, and the lime-green bottle top lets you know exactly what you’re in for.

Because of the positive response to the light citrus flavor of Diet Coke with Lime, Coca-Cola says Diet Coke with Lemon will be altered so that it is lighter.
