Public art law to get P&Z scrutiny in F’ville

An ordinance to regulate “public art” in Fayetteville will be up for approval by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission at its meeting Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The ordinance will have proposed public art displays reviewed by the city’s architectural advisory committee, which also has reviewed signs for the city in addition to building elevations.

After reviewing each public art proposal, the committee would make a recommendation to city staff or the Planning and Zoning Commission to approve or disapprove the application.

The advisory committee will not make the final decision on the applications for public art, however.

A public art standards manual would also be developed to “clearly define all paramaters for public art enhancements.”

If approved by the commission, the ordinance would be forwarded to the City Council for review.

The ordinance came about when questions were raised about the moose statue that greets visitors to the Bugaboo Creek Steak House at the Fayette Pavilion. The council tabled action on the statue so staff could develop a public art ordinance for consideration.

Jahnee Prince, the city’s director of planning and zoning, noted that any member of the public can pick up a copy of the proposed ordinance at City Hall.
