High school athletes in a variety of sports from local schools made their college choices known officially last week as the signing period began Feb. 4, a date known to sports fans as National Signing Day.

The Sandy Creek Patriots football team, coming off an undefeated regular season in 2003, are sending seven members of this year’s graduating class to the college football ranks. They are defensive end Larry Beard (Georgia Southern), lineman Andrew Gardner (Georgia Tech), running back Philip Hyde (Samford), wide receiver Calvin Johnson (Georgia Tech), defensive end Jermaine Jones (Coastal Carolina), receiver-defensive back Will Judson (FAMU) and linebacker Jeremy Long (Samford).

Other Sandy Creek athletes who have already made their college plans known include swimmer Billy Jamerson (Florida State) and baseball player Dusty Bennett (Georgia State).

Four soccer players from McIntosh signed last week: Joni Vickers (Georgia), Christa Mann (Georgia State), Mark Pendergrass (Merchant Marine Academy) and Daniel Hershey (Birmingham Southern).

The only Starr’s Mill player who has signed thus far is Michelle Wegrzyn, who will play soccer at Mercer.

Landmark quarterback Alex Mortensen signed to continue his football career at the University of Arkansas.
