Registration day is coming

Dates set for pre-K, kindergarten and after-school programs

Parents of students who are eligible to attend the Fayette County School System’s pre-school or kindergarten program will be able to register their children for the 2004-2005 school year April 1 from 9-11 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.

Registration will take place at the school the child will attend. Students must be four years old on or before Sept. 1 to attend pre-K and five years old on or before Sept. 1 to enroll in kindergarten.

Also, on April 1 during the same periods, parents who are interested in enrolling their K-5th grade students in the school system’s after school program will be able to pre-register at their child’s school. The program provides opportunities for children to participate in a variety of activities such as homework completion, cooking, crafts, games and computers with quality supervision.

When registering students for a pre-K program, it is important for parents to know that the school system offers two programs that operate under different guidelines.

The Georgia Lottery funded pre-school program is currently offered only at Brooks and Tyrone Elementary Schools. First admittance will be granted to students who live in the attendance areas of the two schools.

If there are vacancies after all eligible students in the schools’ attendance zones have had an opportunity to register for the program, students residing in any Fayette County area will be considered for admission.

In order to prevent long lines on registration day, admission to the Georgia Pre-K program at Brooks and Tyrone will be done by lottery. Parents will be asked to place their child’s name in a drawing that will be held approximately two weeks following the registration day. School personnel will promptly contact the parents of those students who names are drawn. Parents must go in person to either Brooks or Tyrone to enter their child’s name for the lottery. Classes are limited to 20 students each.

A Title I Pre-K program is also offered at Robert J. Burch, East Fayette, Hood Avenue, North Fayette, Oak Grove, and Peachtree City Elementary Schools. The difference between these programs and the ones funded by the Georgia Lottery is that students must meet specific readiness criteria to be eligible to participate in Title I.

In order to register a student for pre-K or kindergarten, parents are required to bring the following items to registration: a certified birth certificate (must have raised seal), a child’s social security card, a property deed, original signed lease agreement or an affidavit of residency. An affidavit can be obtained by contacting Pupil Personnel Services, LaFayette Educational Center, 770-460-3990, ext. 115. Parents must also bring a current gas or electric bill displaying the parent’s name and address of service, and a photo ID of the parent or guardian registering the student.

When a child is accepted into the program, parents will be required to provide an immunization record on the Georgia State form 3231 and eye, ear and dental record on the Georgia State form 3300. For additional information and appointments for immunizations, eye, ear and dental records, please contact the Fayette County Health Department at 770-460-5730, ext. 5416 or your family physician.
