Wells: No problem
with ethics
By JOHN THOMPSON Fayette County Commissioner Linda Wells is disputing the charges of a concerned voter about her participation in a recent discussion concerning liquor in the unincorporated county. In an anonymous letter to The Citizen, the resident stated that Wells is the financial consultant for the Palmer Course at Starrs Mill. Wells handles the companys 401K retirement account. As you know, she was one of two commission members that voted in favor of liquor by the drink in unincorporated Fayette County, when the issue was raised by the owner of Wyant Golf Enterprises, the operator of the course, the letter writer said. Wells admitted being a consultant for the course, but said she did not violate any ethics ordinances. Im going to make about $125 from them this year, she said. Wells consulted the countys legal staff, who told her she was not in violation. Their opinion was that if it was just for the golf course, I should recuse myself, but since this vote was for the whole county, it would not be a violation to talk about it, she said. Wells is the second commissioner to come under fire for possible ethics violations. Two weeks ago, Commission Chairman Greg Dunn shrugged off ethics concerns raised because he is a member of the board of trustees for the nonprofit company that owns the clubhouse and golf course. In a related move, the County Commission will consider a change in ownership request for the beer and wine license at the golf course tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the County Administrative Complex.
