Peachtree City’s golf cart legislation was scheduled today to go to the floor of the State Senate for a formal — and final — vote, Sen. Mitch Seabaugh of Sharpsburg said Thursday.

The bill that would restore the city’s ordinance allowing underage and unlicensed drivers to operate golf carts on city paths and streets slipped easily through the Senate Transportation Committee on Tuesday; Seabaugh had predicted it would come up for a vote possibly by week’s end.

House Bill 1063 was introduced by Rep. Lynn Westmoreland prior to the start of the General Assembly session Jan. 12, and was approved by the House membership 169-0 Jan. 29.

With no formal opposition expected today in the Senate either, the bill could be sent on to Gov. Sonny Perdue for a signature in a matter of days. Though the law will be of statewide impact, it won’t have to wait until the start of the state’s fiscal year July 1 to go into affect, Westmoreland said, due to language written into it that suggests the urgency.

Perdue saw first hand how passionate city residents can be about their golf carts when he rode as grand marshal in the city’s Fourth of July parade last summer. For that reason, he’s expected to authorize the law without much delay, city officials have said.
