Sidewalk construction underway on Beauregard Blvd.

Work has begun on a sidewalk along Beauregard Boulevard that is part of Fayetteville’s master plan to add sidewalks and paths leading to the downtown area.

The sidewalk, on the north side of the road, will likely link to a future path project on Grady Avenue that will connect to Spring Hill Elementary and Fayette Middle schools, officials hope. The city is seeking an $800,000 grant to build an additional 2.63 miles of pedestrian access routes.

One of the proposed sidewalk connections will link an existing sidewalk along Hwy. 54 near Jeff Davis Drive to Booker Street, the home of East Fayette Elementary.

The Lee Street sidewalk will connect the downtown area with the new judicial complex, and a sidewalk along Hwy. 54 west will link businesses from the Magnolia Park office complex all the way to the Fayette County Government Stonewall complex.

Another sidewalk along Hwy. 54 east would like residential areas from Gwinnett Street to the entrance of the city's industrial park on Robinson Drive.

The project would require an estimated $340,000 in matching funds, but the cost may be significantly less, officials said. Also, the city could spread the work over several budget years to make it more affordable if necessary.
