House Bill 1068 — Rep. Lynn Westmoreland’s proposal to return golf cart driving priviledges to unlicensed drivers in Peachtree City — sailed through the House of Representatives on Thursday, gaining passage unanimously.

The 169-0 vote to approve the bill, which changes the definition of “motorized cart” and operating them on state highways, had little or no debate, said a spokeswoman in Westmoreland’s office. It cleared the House Motor Vehicles committee Tuesday.

“This went faster than we expected, I know that,” said Diana Daniels, secretary to Westmoreland, who was away from the capitol Thursday afternoon.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where Sen. Mitch Seabaugh had introduced a similar proposal that would be made unnecessary if the House version gains passage, which is expected.

“It could happen within a week,” said Daniels.

Westmoreland had expressed confidence that the amendment to state law would gain easy approval. If the Senate OKs the change, the bill could be signed by the governor before the 40-day session ends in late March.
