Last year was a year for Coweta County to try and continue to control the growth that has been occurring over the last decade.

In a special year-end report, public information officer Tom Corker highlighted several of the county’s achievements in 2003.

One of the main improvements in the planning and zoning area was the implementation of the Quality Development Corridor District. The district covers the eastern portion of Ga. Highway 34 from the city limits of Newnan to Ebenezer Church Road. The standards apply only to structures that are within 1,000 feet of the right-of-way.

Some of the standards include:

• Reducing the impervious service area from 90 percent to 75 percent.

• Requiring a landscape plan to be prepared by a registered landscape architect.

• Placing all utilities underground.

• Installing decorative pavers at any entrances that have right-of-ways.

• Increasing the planted tree height from five feet to eight feet.

Other highlights during 2003 included:

• Starting construction on the B.T. Brown water treatment facility.

• Dedicating a new arts center in honor of Harriet Alexander.

• Renovating the Senoia ball fields and concession area.

• Completing the James McGuffey Nature Center.

• Increasing events at the fairgrounds by 100 percent.

• Signing an agreement with Avis to provide rental cars to airport customers.
