It’s whole new world for Senoia’s library

Christmas came a little late this year for the Senoia Library, but the wait was worth it.

Between Christmas and New Year’s, the library’s staff moved everything from the old building on Main Street that had housed the library for years, just down the street to a more spacious location.

“We’ve got about 400 more square feet and we love it,” said librarian Aime Scarbrough.

The library’s new location is the home of the former East Coweta Journal newspaper, and patrons at the library have been enthusiastic about the new space.

“Everybody has just been real pleased with the lighting. It’s so much brighter in here now,” Scarbrough said.

The added space has allowed the libarray to rearrange and put more emphasis on how the books are are organized. In the old building, the juvenile fiction was stacked on top of other shelves because there was no space. Now, it’s more accesible at waist-high level shelves.

Additionally, the building now has two bathrooms and two checkout areas. Another bonus for Scarbrough is that she now has an office.

“It’s full of clutter right now, but we’re slowly getting organized,” she added.

Most of the books and equipment were moved during the holiday week, but Scarbrough said everything was hooked up and in place last week.

The library was able to move after the city decided to lease the former newspaper office for additional space. Some leaders suggested the police department could make better use of the space, and a minor skirmish erupted on the City Council over which department should use the space.

But the library was eventually awarded the space, and the police department will now expand into the old library.

“We’re just glad to have this space and so are our customers.”
