MLK event Monday at Starr’s Mill

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration is once again planned for Monday from 10 a.m.-noon at the Starr’s Mill High School auditorium. This annual event is scheduled to include participants from a broad spectrum of cultures. The theme for the celebration is “Keeping the Dream Alive.”

The Fayette NAACP has sponsored the King Day Celebration in cooperation with the Fayette County School System for several years and the much-anticipated event is often well attended. Fayette Magistrate Court Judge Chuck Floyd will deliver the main address.

Starr’s Mill High School is on Ga. Highway 74 just south of Peachtree City.

Other upcoming events include a voter registration drive Sunday, Feb. 1, at some Fayette area African-American churches. Persons interested in becoming trained to register voters are invited to attend a class taught by the Fayette County Elections Office complex Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. The Elections Office is in Fayetteville at the county’s Stonewall Avenue office complex at the intersection of Ga. highways 85 and 54. The deadline for registering to vote in the Georgia Presidential Primary is Monday, Feb. 2. The primary will Tuesday, March 2.

The Fayette NAACP Branch continues to provide a necessary service to the Fayette County community. In addition to the ongoing duties of investigating and resolving numerous complaints, the Branch hosted its sixth Annual Freedom Fund Banquet in October, provided gift baskets to needy families during the Thanksgiving season and supported a Kwanzaa Celebration in December. The Fayette NAACP Branch holds its regular monthly meetings at the Flat Rock A. M. E. Church every second Saturday of the month. Flat Rock A.M.E. Church is just off Ga. Highway 54 between Peachtree City and Fayetteville. All members are encouraged to attend.
