Public art rules under review for Fayetteville

Public “art” such as the moose statue greeting patrons at Bugaboo Creek Steak House has inspired Fayetteville officials to develop a ordinance to allow such displays.

Technically, the wooden moose would be considered a sign and thus afoul of the sign ordinance. But the City Council decided in November to give the moose a temporary reprieve and let staff develop a public art ordinance.

The city’s planning commission now has a draft ordinance to work on, and they likely make a few minor changes it at the next meeting Jan. 27.

The ordinance would have proposed public art displays reviewed by a public art advisory committee, which also has reviewed signs for the city. After reviewing each proposal, the committee would make a recommendation to city staff or the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission to approve or disapprove the application.

The advisory committee will not make the final decision on the applications for public art, however.

A public art standards manual would also be developed to “clearly define all parameters for public art enhancements.”
