Daughter honors parents in support of education Education has always played an important role in Betsy Getreu's life and now she is helping to spread it to others. Growing up, her parents Harold and Selena Taliaferro impressed upon Getreu the importance of having a solid education. After their deaths, she and her siblings decided to honor her parent's legacy by setting up a scholarship fund to recognize students who demonstrate academic excellence as well as support school based programs that help enhance the learning process. Last year, Getreus family donated four laptop computers to high school seniors who had demonstrated excellence in math or art. This year Getreu has added a $1,000 gift to J. C. Booth Middle School to benefit the school's Science Olympiad team and technology program. I picked the computer program because I am a computer nerd by trade. I also know that the Science Olympiad team always needs money to help offset costs for all of the training that they do throughout the year, Getreu said. Getreu said she plans to continue making donations to education to honor her parents for as long as she is able to do so. I'm trying to do good work with the inheritance that my parents left me. They were big believers in education and I can't think of a better way to honor their memory.
