County library taking inventory By MICHAEL BOYLAN Fayetteville resident Qui Nidey homeschools her children. Recently, she was asked by her homeschool group to bring in the most indispensable item to a parent who homeschools their children and she brought in her library card. Nidey applauds the Fayette County Library for their helpfulness and their service is only going to get better. Thats because the library is currently taking inventory and when the process is done, they will have a better idea of what they have and where it is. The idea came from the state and on Monday morning, Michael Imsand, Help Desk manager of PINES, the Public Information Network for Electronic Services, was walking the librarys staff through the inventory process. Staff members will use the eight scanners provided to the Flint River Regional Library System and scan over 80,000 materials, one section at a time. After using the scanners, the information is uploaded to the state computer. A report is then printed out, detailing what the library has and what is deemed missing, providing a correct count. This way the staff doesnt spend time looking for materials they dont have, said Imsand. By taking inventory, the state gets to see how they money they have invested in the collection has been spent. Libraries around Georgia started taking inventory via the new system towards the end of 2003. At Imsands last library, 42,000 materials were scanned over the course of two days by seven scanners. The inventory process should be done soon and visitors wont have to worry about the library closing its doors while it is being done.
