Palmetto dealing with fast growth

In 2003, Palmetto officials decided to take a deep breath to catch up with the area’s growth. In the summer, the City Council put the brakes on any new residential development for the next year.

The state of Georgia asked the city to place a  moratorium on new development in order to study the town’s sewer system and look for other methods to increase that capacity. The moratorium will be in effect through July 6, 2004.

Palmetto joined an increasing number of communities in the south metro area that have implemented moratoriums.

Other events that occurred in the city last year included:

  • Celebrating its 150th anniversary in September. The city threw an old-fashioned birthday party with four days of fun and food.
  • Giving final approval, along with Fairburn and Union City, for a new water reservoir on Bear Creek. The site along Bear Creek was chosen to build the reservoir which will provide 8 million gallons of water per day and 11 million gallons a day by the year 2050.
