All things work together for good? By REV. KNOX HERNDON Life is very interesting, isn't it? Things happen and you just either say "gee whiz" or "how or why in the world did that happen?" Then we read our Bibles and it states that "all things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to His purposes." I have buried deep in my files a sermon entitled "God's Glorious Reversals." I am not going to preach it here but the idea is that life can be going full steam in one direction and without warning, can be totally reversed! We lived in Berlin Germany from 1977 to 1980. As you remember, it was the Capital of Germany during the Third Reich. In fact the 1936 Olympics were held in the massive Berlin Stadium when Hitler was near the height of his power. He had been professing that the German people were certainly the master race of the whole world and that all others were inferior. During those very Olympic games were when Jesse Owens, an African American, took all the gold medals. In just forty-three years later in 1979, in that same Berlin Stadium built for the master race, the Billy Graham Crusade took place. We were there! One day Saddam Hussein was ruling Iraq with a murderous regime living in palace after palace, killing whom ever and whenever he wished. He even had taught his two sons to do the same. The next time you hear from him he is on TV being examined by an American Forces Doctor after he was captured like a worm from a hole in the ground. His two sons died as they had lived-by the sword. By the time you read this article our church would have performed two nights of our Annual "Journey to Bethlehem" Dec. 17 and 18. It has been reported that these have been two of the coldest nights so far this year. Last night it got down to 42 degrees with a fifteen knot wind. Tonight it will get down to twenty-nine degrees with a fifteen knot wind. Why do we do it outside? Because that is the way it was back in Bethlehem. In fact last night was one of those truly beautiful clear cold nights. Every star was out and all our people showed up (except for those home sick in bed). It was a truly beautiful "gift to Jesus" no matter who stayed home because of the cold. This was one of those "Godly Glorious Reversals" when you get more out of something than what it is intended for. We had the sweetest fellowship all bundled up and braving the cold. Tonight the 18th, we will have three Roman re-enactors who will be driving all the way from Athens to participate in this glorious event. I would venture to say that they will also be totally blessed by their efforts. Things do all work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purposes.
