Police chased a vehicle stolen from Peachtree City Tuesday morning through south Fulton County I-85 at speeds reaching 120 mph before the suspect wrecked the car at the on-ramp to Central Avenue in Hapeville.

The suspect, described by a pursuing officer as a large black male, somehow got away after running into a wooded area, police said. No clothing description of the suspect was given, but he was believed to be armed and dangerous since guns were found in the car, according to officers on the scene.

Police from Fairburn, Hapeville, College Park and Tyrone police departments joined the Fayette and Fulton County sheriff’s departments and the Georgia State Patrol in the search for the suspect. The vehicle, a 1993 blue GMC Jimmy truck, had one of its windows broken out.

The truck was taken from a Peachtree City subdivision just off Hwy. 74 after 9 a.m. After a lookout for the vehicle was broadcast to other agencies, a Tyrone police officer spotted it northbound on Hwy. 74 and gave pursuit.

The chase continued up Hwy. 74 until the suspect diverted onto I-85 north. Pursuing officers reported speeds from 100 to 120 mph during the pursuit at times.
