Deputy collides with F’ville man en route to burglary call Sunday evening

A Fayette County sheriff’s deputy and a Fayetteville man were seriously injured Sunday evening when their vehicles collided as the deputy was responding to a burglary-in-progress call, police said.

Terry Jason Lee, 22, of Fayetteville, had the green light when he was headed northbound on Jeff Davis Drive in Fayetteville after 9 p.m., said Capt. Bryan Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. Lee’s truck struck the driver’s side of the patrol car, which was being driven west on Ga. Highway 54 by Dep. Steve Simpson, 36, of Smyrna, Woodie said.

It took emergency crews roughly 40 minutes to extricate Simpson, largely because of his size, Woodie said. The lights and siren of Simpson’s patrol car were activated at the time of the crash, Woodie noted.

Simpson also slowed somewhat when his patrol car approached the intersection, but it is not clear how much he slowed down, Woodie said.

Lee was scheduled to have leg surgery Tuesday and Simpson has a variety of injuries including a concussion, a fractured leg and pelvis and other injuries to his left side.

“They’re both expected to be okay,” Woodie said, adding that the collision “could easily have been a fatal crash.”

Because the accident involved a county sheriff’s deputy, the Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident, Woodie said. As of Tuesday morning, there were no indications charges would be filed in connection with the collision, Woodie said.
