County blasts latest Fayetteville annexation

“They just continue their march towards Peachtree City.”

That was Fayette County Commission chairman Greg Dunn’s reaction Thursday night to the latest annexation request from the city of Fayetteville.

In the end, the county had no choice and voted not to object to the request from Heritage Community Church for 5.6 acres on Lester Road to be annexed into Fayetteville.

When the issue was brought before the board, zoning administrator Kathy Zeitler made the staff’s feelings known.

“We feel there is additional room on the property to accommodate their septic needs. There is no reason for annexation, and the county will still provide water and fire protection,” she said.

But, since the use of the property remains the same, the county cannot file a land use objection, so its hands are tied, and it can only watch as the annexation process is completed.

After the board voted not to object, County Commissioner Peter Pfeifer delivered the last word on the subject to his counterparts in Fayetteville.

“We are asking you not to make this annexation,” he said.

In other news, the county unanimously approved rezoning 4.5 acres at the intersections of Ga. Highway 85, Ga. Highway 279 and Old Road for a QuikTrip convenience store and retail space.

Attorney Doug Warner, who represented QuikTrip, said the company is a model corporate citizen.

“They spend an average of $40,000 a year on aesthetics, and don’t sell any pornography or drug paraphernalia,” he said.

The convenience store would be 4,500 sq. ft. and another 8,000 sq. ft. parcel would be developed as either a sit-down restaurant or additional retail.

“If it’s a restaurant, it would have to be something like a Western Sizzlin’ that doesn’t serve alcohol, because that parcel is closer to a church,” Warner said.

Nobody in the audience objected to the proposal, and Commissioner A.G. VanLandingham made the motion to approve the request with two conditions: Old Road would be paved to the property line and all exterior lighting would be contained on the property.

The motion passed 4-0. Commissioner Linda Wells was absent from the meeting.
