Church seeks annexation to expand campus into Fayetteville near county boundary

A local church wishing to expand is asking Fayetteville to annex 5.67 acres on Lester Road next to Cleveland Elementary School for its church campus.

Heritage Community Church, located just outside the western city limits, wants to build a new sanctuary and add more classroom and office space, according to city staff. The property is currently zoned agriculture-rural and would be rezoned to single family residential if the church’s request is approved.

The planning and zoning commission will likely vote on the measure at its next meeting Dec. 16. The commission can only recommend a position on the rezoning to the city council, which has the final say on the request.

The church is seeking an R-70 single-family residential rezoning, which is the zoning of the property on the city’s zoning map. The zoning is in keeping with the city’s future land use map for low-density, single-family zoning, according to city staff.

The property would be accessed through an existing curb cut on Lester Road.

The church needs to connect to the city’s sewer system to handle the additional capacity, officials said. City staff is recommending approval of the annexation.

The church’s plans would increase the volume of traffic slightly but should not diminish the capacity of Lester Road to handle additional traffic, said senior city planner Eldridge Gunn.

The parcel is designated as single family residential on the city’s zoning map.
