Palmetto defers subdivision rezoning

It was standing room only at Palmetto City Hall during a public hearing Monday night. Steve Freeman of Toasters Investment Corporation packed the residents in with his proposed Palmetto Oaks project along Hutcheson Ferry Road.

The 71 acre single-family subdivision was facing stiff competition and Freeman was well aware of it.

In response to the community’s concern, Toasters Investments is conducting a community meeting at the Senior Citizen's Center on Turner Avenue, January 13 at 7 p.m.. Freeman hopes to share more information about the project and to hear input from concerned citizens.

The City Council agreed to postpone their final decision about Palmetto Oaks until the February 2 meeting. The rezoning has already reviewed and recommended for approval by the Zoning Board. Many residents at the meeting opposed the change from R-1 to R-2, which would allow for lots as small as half an acre.

Growth has been sweeping around Atlanta for more than a decade and South Fulton County seems to be the latest battleground against denser development. Whether a compromise can be met that benefits everyone involved in the future plans of Palmetto could be decided at the Jan.13 meeting.
