Hughes takes job in Virginia

Harry Hughes, who has been overseeing Coweta County’s Water and Sewer Department for the past six and one-half years, has accepted a position in Culpeper, Va., as director of environmental services.

Culpeper is approximately 60 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. & 45 miles north of Charlottesville, Va., and is ranked as one of the top ten small towns in the country.ÊCulpeper County has a population of some 33,000 and the town of Culpeper is home to some 10,000 of those residents.

As Director of Environmental Services, Hughes’ primary responsibilities will be planning and organizing the day-to-day operations of the water treatment facility and the wastewater treatment facility.

Hughes knows that his successor will have a great system to operate and a system that has a lot of potential in the years ahead with construction of the B.T. Brown water treatment facility and the expansion of the Shenandoah Sewerage Treatment facility.

“The potential of this department is tremendous and will prove to be a real boon for Coweta County,” Hughes said.

Hughes is grateful for the opportunities he has been given while at the helm of the county’s water and sewer department.

“I am very appreciative of every opportunity that has presented itself during my tenure here.ÊThis department has faced a multitude of challenges and those challenges have helped me develop and mould my skills.ÊCoweta County has been a great place to live and work over almost seven years and I will miss it.”

Hughes will complete his work for Coweta County Dec. 26 and is scheduled to begin his new duties in Culpeper Dec. 29.ÊHis family will remain in Coweta County through the end of the current school year.

When asked why he decided to take the new position, Hughes stated simply that the opportunity presented itself for him to return to his family roots.Ê

“My family has its roots in Virginia, roots that run prior to the Civil War, my Mom grew up in Virginia, and when the opportunity presented itself, I decided to take my family back to area where so much history has occurred including my family history.”
