Obituaries

Jack L. Wilkerson


Jack L. Wilkerson, 78, Fayetteville, died Nov. 17, 2003. He was born May 21, 1925 in Winter Haven, Fla. His family moved to Nashville, Ga. in 1934 where he attended public schools. He was a veteran of world War II with tours of duty in China and Germany. He participated in the humanitarian food drop in Burma and in Germany he guarded Rudolph Hess at Spandau Prison. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant. He graduated from Georgia Southern and John Marshall Law School. He served in the Georgia House of Representatives, was in the automobile finance business and a staff real estate appraiser. A gospel singer, he performed with Tex Ritter and recorded a solo gospel album in 1966. Services were at Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. William Priester officiating. Survivors include his wife, Elva Wilkerson, Fayetteville; a son, Lee and Cindy Wilkerson, Jacksonville, Fla.; and three granddaughters, Jacksonville, Fla.

Joseph P. Haggerty


Joseph P. Haggerty, 74, Peachtree City, died Nov. 18, 2003. He was born April 5, 1929 in Maria, Pennsylvania. He was a veteran of Korea and Viet Nam, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart among other commendations during his 30 years of service, attaining the rank of Command Sergeant Major. A resident of Peachtree City for three years, he was active in the Heritage Christian Church “Prime Timers’, as well as participating in activities and trips with the Fayette County Recreation Dept. Memorial services were at the Heritage Christian Church with interment at Cap May County Veterans Cemetery, New Jersey. Survivors include his son, J. P. and Kristin Haggerty, Peachtree City; a grandson, Patrick Haggerty, Peachtree City; a granddaughter, Katherine Haggerty, Peachtree City; a friend, Kay, Peachtree City; a brother, Ed and Deloris Haggerty; two nephews and two nieces, Medford, New Jersey; and sisters-in-law, Lois and Irene.

Luis Hernandez


Luis Hernandez, 77, Peachtree City, died Nov. 22, 2003. He was born Nov. 30, 1925 in Bogota, Columbia, South America. Survivors include his wife, Maria Teresa Hernandez, Peachtree City; children, Elsa, George, Maria, Sonia, and John: their families, Jim, Ingrid, Alexander, William, Christina, Tammy, Samantha, and Jonnie. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Attn. Gift Processing, 1687 Tullie Circle, Atlanta, GA 30329. Metro Crematory, Peachtree City, was in charge.

Exie Tyler Andrews


Exie Tyler Andrews, 87, Union City, died Nov. 22, 2003. She was born Aug. 11, 1916 in Jasper County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Vinson Andrews. Services were at the Christian City chapel with the Rev. Bob Kerr and the Rev. Dr. Dee Shellnutt officiating. Interment was at Hillandale Memorial Gardens, Lithonia, Ga. Survivors include a son, Sammy and Judy Andrews, Fayetteville; a daughter, Shelby and Burt Fargason, Pell City, Ala.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.

Virginia Gayle Thomas


Virginia Gayle Thomas, 59, Winston, died Nov. 23, 2003. She was born June 5, 1944 in Anniston, Ala. She was preceded in death by her father, T. J. Bell, and a son, Bill Thomas. Services were at the Hightower Memorial Chapel, Douglasville with the Rev. Cecil Ross officiating. Interment was at the Mozley Memorial Gardens. Survivors include her husband, William Joseph Thomas, Winston; her mother, Maggie Bell, Tifton, Ga.; daughters, Susan Stoyles, and Shannon Wadsworth, both of Villa Rica, and Sandy Brewer, Douglasville; brothers, Tommy Bell, Fayetteville, Jimmy Bell, Tifton, and Ronnie Bell, McDonough; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Hightower’s Memorial Chapel, Douglasville, was in charge.

John Thomas Elfer Jr.


John Thomas Elfer Jr., 64, Fayetteville, died Nov. 23, 2003. He was born April 13, 1939 in New Orleans, La., the son of John Thomas and Evelyn H. Elfer Sr. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi and served four years in the United States Coast Guard. He was instrumental in establishing the kindergarten and school lunch programs at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School. Until his retirement in 1998, he was a behavior therapist for the Clayton County School system. A funeral mass was held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with interment at Grantville City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Alice Skeen Elfer, Fayetteville; a son, John Thomas and Olie Blansett Elfer III, Redwood, Miss., and Charles Joseph Elfer and fiancée, Jennifer L. Godwin, Fayetteville; and a granddaughter, Allison Julie Elfer, Redwood, Miss. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Peachtree City, was in charge.

Ethel Mae Price


Ethel Mae Price, 81, Fayetteville, died Nov. 29, 2003. She was born April 26, 1922. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Woodfin Price. Memorial services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel, Peachtree City, with the Rev. Darwin Caldwell officiating. Survivors include children, Jim and Lynda Price Baxter, Havana, Fla., Gary and Karan Price, Eagle River, Alaska, and Fred and Deborah Price Mann, Peachtree City; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Quin, Vestavia Hills, Ala. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Peachtree City, was in charge.

Maybell Stewart


Maybell Stewart, 79, Newnan, died Nov. 27, 2003. She was born Nov. 1, 1924 in Fayette County, the daughter of the late Rufus Green and Georgia Williford Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Julian Stewart. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with interment at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery, Palmetto. Survivors include a son, Mike and Paula Stewart, Newnan; daughters, Sharon and Randy Chancey, Fayetteville, and Carol and Buck Parker and June and Mike Smith, all of Newnan; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Sallie Hester and Omergene Watson, both of East Point. Robert Fogg


Robert Fogg, Marietta, 93, formerly of Fayetteville, died Nov. 24, 2003. He was born Oct. 26, 1910 in Unadilla. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Elizabeth Hudson. Graveside services were at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City, with the Rev. Glenn Stringham officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Ann Ford, Marietta; a son-in-law, Dick Ford, Marietta; grandsons, Mr. and Mrs. Craig Ford, Roswell, and Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Ford, Canton; a great-grandson, Park Ford, Canton; and a brother, Harvey Fogg, Christian City.
