Highway widening could connect three counties

Imagine traveling on a four-lane road from Clayton County through the cities of Fayetteville and Peachtree City all the way to Newnan.

Many residents have had that dream for years, and it soon may become a reality.

One of Fayette County’s top 10 transportation projects for the next 20 years is the widening of Ga. Highway 54 from McDonough Road, just east of Fayetteville in the vicinity of McCurry Park, to U.S. 41/Tara Boulevard across the Clayton County line into Jonesboro.

“That’s a great project and one we want to keep it on the front-burner of the DOT,” said public works director Lee Hearn.

The project is set for construction in 2008, and Fayette’s cost for the road is $11.08 million in 2003 dollars.

Widening the road would give Fayette residents quick access to Clayton County and Interstate 75.

Hearn said the county is competing for dollars with other areas that have many more traffic problems than Fayette.

“We want to make sure our planning prevents those types of problems,” Hearn said.
