Despite a low number of pre-registered teams and individual walkers for the 2003 Southern Crescent Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, the event was once again a success. The organizers had a party and awards ceremony Nov. 14 to express their gratitude.

There were over 1,000 participants this year and they raised a grand total of $167,000, which is a $19,000 increase from last year’s total. The revenue includes contributions from sponsors, and money raised by teams and individual walkers. Money raised goes to help fund research and also provides financial assistance, educational programs, support groups and personalized counseling.

The top four sponsor awards were Carroll Electric Membership Foundation, Coweta-Fayette Trust Operation Round-Up, Print Graphics Services and Talbot State Bank. The first place team went to Governor’s Glen Go Getters who raised $20,064, followed by Newnan Hospital/Beaulieu Convalescent Center who raised $7,141 and World Airways, which raised $7,054. The top four individual awards went to Nelda Wright, $1,304; Patricia Carroll, $500; Krystal Howard, $412 and Andi Robinson, $400.

The Alzheimer’s Association Georgia Chapter had previously received $28,150 in Atlanta from the Southern Crescent Walk. At the party, Dave Houston, VP of Development, was presented with a check in the amount of $126, 250 making the total contribution from the 2003 Memory Walk $154,400. There were $13, 287 In-Kind donations making the grand total $167,687.

Walk organizers urge everyone to mark their calendars for Oct. 2, 2004, which is the date of next year’s walk.
