Totes For Tots to provide for children in foster care Georgia Cancer Specialists leads second annual suitcase drive Did you know that children in foster care often move their belongings in garbage bags? It is no wonder they feel disposable. That is why Georgia Cancer Specialists is sponsoring its second annual Totes For Tots suitcase drive to help foster children ease the pain of their frequent and forced relocations. GCS is asking donors in Atlanta and Macon to deliver a new suitcase to one of the eleven designated GCS offices on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 19, 2004. GCS employees will collect the totes at the offices from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. GCS CEO Dr. Bruce Feinberg said the collection date was chosen in accordance with MLK Day, a company holiday for GCS. The King Holiday commemorates community involvement, he said. Many GCS employees have volunteered to collect suitcases on their day off again this year. It is a gratifying way to honor Dr. Kings memory. Last year, GCS collected and distributed more than 1,000 bags. Dee Simms serves as the Child Advocate for the Protection of Children at the Office of the Child Advocate, an independent group that monitors and oversees DFCS operations at the state and local levels. This is a serious issue for our states 15,000 foster children, she said. With Totes for Tots, GCS has given the community an excellent opportunity to make a difference. The participating GCS office in Fayetteville is at 1250 Ga. Highway 54 West, Suite 102. The phone number is 678-817-1117.
