Last-minute donations sought for needy families

A unexpected shortfall has left local officials scrambling to provide Thanksgiving meals for about 50 needy families.

There was a spike in applications for assistance since last week, according to Sharon Herbert of the Fayette County Department of Family and Children Services. Before that, officials felt comfortable they had a good handle on providing meals for local families, Herbert said.

The best way local residents can help is by providing gift cards to local grocery stores so the necessary food can be purchased up until the last minute, Herbert said.

The cards can be dropped off at the DFCS office at 905 Ga. Highway 85 South just past the south Chick-fil-A restaurant. The office will be open today from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is also a drop box that can be used to leave donations.

For more information, contact Herbert at 770-460-2569.

Area churches, civic groups, schools and other volunteers have stepped forward to help out with the program.
