Kids rout burglar

A burglar apparently got more than he expected Tuesday morning when he entered a north Fayette home and saw two children on their holiday break from school.

The suspect, described as a “bulky” black male wearing a jacket fled the scene after spotting the youths, who retreated to a rear bedroom with a baseball bat and dialed 911, said Lt. Col. Bruce Jordan of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies searched the area on foot immediately after the incident, and patrol would be beefed up in the area, Jordan said.

Jordan said it was the county’s first burglary of the Christmas holidays, and burglaries usually pick up this time of year.

Moments before entering the house on Ga. Highway 279 near Mayfair Lane, the burglar knocked on the door and no one answered, Jordan said. Because the house was locked up, the burglar had to enter through a window.

And when the burglar left, “He came out the same way he went in,” Jordan said.

When deputies arrived at the scene, it was unclear whether the burglar had left or not, and their only way into the house was through the same window, Jordan added.

“We had to clear the house,” to make sure the burglar wasn’t still inside, Jordan said.

After seeing the burglar and retreating to a rear bedroom, one of the kids grabbed a baseball bat to defend themselves if necessary, Jordan added.

“The kids did exactly what they were supposed to do: call 911 as quick as possible,” Jordan said.

A sheriff’s deputy was nearby when the 911 call was placed at 11:08 a.m. and was on the scene one minute later, Jordan said.

The burglar did not get away with any loot, Jordan added.
