TDK to get $1M boost

It now looks like smooth sailing for the long-talked about TDK Boulevard project.

During last Thursday’s County Commission meeting, Chairman Greg Dunn jubilantly announced the project had received just over $1 million in state funds from the Department of Transportation.

“I would like to offer a special thanks to Sen. Mitch Seabaugh who helped us out with this project,” Dunn said.

Nearly $600,000 of the funds will go towards the bridge spanning Line Creek, while the rest will help defray material costs.

Fayette County Public Works Director recommended Mallett and Associates for the project manager job, and said construction could begin by the end of the year.

“We just want to make sure all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed,” he said.

The total cost of the connector is right at $4 million, with Coweta County contributing about $1.79 million, Hearn said. With the DOT ponying up more than $1 million, Hearn said Fayette’s portion of the road will be a little over $1 million. However, Peachtree City has pledged $200,000 towards the road, so the county’s share will actually drop to around $800,000.

The connector offers residents easy another entry point to Fayette and Coweta counties, and has been on the county’s transportation priority list for many years.

Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown would have liked to have seen south Ga. Highway 74 widened at the same time, but it will not be done until 2006.

Hearn is glad to see the project details get finalized, and said this now allows the county to focus on other traffic “hot spots.”

“For a number of years, we’ve had a focus on Peachtree City. Now it’s time to start focusing on fixing Fayetteville’s traffic problems.”
