Knight Group celebrates 25 years

A crowd of more than 275 well-wishers turned out for the recent 25th anniversary celebration for The Knight Group, one of the Metro South area’s most active home builders.

Held at the Knight family’s place near Brooks in South Fayette County, the Barbecue & Bluegrass at Brooks event featured humor by famed Atlanta entertainer Jerry Farber, music by Common Ground, food catered by OB’s Barbecue, and special activities for the children.

Receiving special recognition were company founders Perry and Scott Knight, who are both still active with the company.

Scott’s son Chris, who now serves as vice president, welcomed the crowd to "a very special year and event for us", adding that "we are very humbled and flattered by the response." He referred to his father and his uncle as "the guys that made it happen."

Jay Knight, Perry’s son who now is the president, recalled that it all began 25 years when the Knight brothers decided to build a deck on their house. After that, he said, they started building sundecks as a business, later expanding into aluminum siding installation, roofing, and painting, and then going into framing houses.

A year after starting the framing business, he said, they were framing a house a day, while saving as much as they could and putting the money back into the business. "They built a house and sold it, and so on, and two years ago, the company had grown to the level of building 450 homes a year."

Thanking the company representatives in the audience, Jay Knight told them that "we (the Knights) have done every job in the business over the years, so we can really appreciate what all of you have done."

The Knight Group, Inc., based in Jonesboro, was founded in 1978 and is currently building in Clayton, Henry, South Fulton and DeKalb counties. The company was No. 14 in the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s annual listing of "Atlanta’s Top 25 Home Builders."
