Computer plan underway for council members

Fayetteville officials are developing a plan that would provide portable computers to council members for official city business.

That way, council members could check their city e-mail accounts and download their “council packet” information from City Hall, eliminating the sometimes-thick paper versions of the council packet that are now issued to each council member.

Eventually, council members will be able to use the portable computers to link with the city’s computer network to get any type of information they might need, said City Manager Joe Morton.

“Obviously, there will be a learning curve involved,” Morton said, adding that staff is identifying the type of equipment needed to pull off the concept.

The city plans to issue council members a “tablet PC” which is similar to a laptop model but has the capability of using a special stylus like an ink pen which would write on the computer’s screen, Morton said.

“We think it will really help us to get the information better and quicker,” Morton said.
