Geis cited for state honor

In recognition of her efforts to help foster social studies development in Fayette County and throughout Georgia, the Georgia Council for the Social Studies has selected Social Studies Coordinator Cathy Geis of the Fayette County School System as this year’s Outstanding Social Studies Educator.

The purpose of the award is to recognize educators who have made an outstanding contribution to the teaching of social studies. Educators can receive the award only one time.

“Cathy has demonstrated significant service to the social studies profession through her very dedicated and enthusiastic support of the discipline. I have worked with her for many years and have long admired her leadership and her professionalism in the field of social studies,” said Mary E. Stakes, public service associate for the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia and nominator of Geis for the award.

Geis has worked for 22 years as a social studies educator, first as a classroom teacher and currently as a coordinator. Her dedication to her profession has earned her a list of recognitions from her peers over the last several years.

Geis received the Georgia Geography Educator of the Year award in 2002, in 1999 and 2003 she received a state Program of Excellence award from the Georgia Council on Economic Education, and the State Board of Education has recognized her as an Outstanding Social Studies Coordinator.

Most recently her peers nominated her as a candidate for National Social Studies Supervisor of the Year; the winner will be announced this month.
