Four children were taken into custody by state officials Friday afternoon after their father threatened to kill investigators from the Department of Family and Children Services, police said.

The father, Scottie Carey, 25, told the DFCS investigators he would “blow their heads off” during the incident at his home in the Grenoble subdivision, said Police Chief James Murray.

Scottie Carey drove away from the home with his wife Tammy Carey and two of their children, according to police. Officers found drugs and two firearms inside the family’s van after it was pulled over near the city limits on Ga. Highway 54 East, police said.

Scottie Carey was charged with making terroristic threats, obstruction of a police officer, disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana (less than one ounce); he fought with officers briefly after he was handcuffed, Murray said.

Tammy Carey, 27, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, police said.

In addition to the two children who were in the van when the incident occurred, DFCS workers also took custody of two of the Carey’s children who were in school at the time, Murray said.

“They were really put in jeopardy while doing their job,” Murray said, complimenting the efforts of the DFCS investigators who followed the Carey’s van so officers could stop it.

Murray also noted that the two children who were in the van were in danger also.

“We’re just thankful nobody got hurt,” Murray said. “We don’t know where he was going or what he was going to do.”
