The Marquis de LaFayette Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, will hold a rededication of the gravesite of Major David Dickson Saturday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m.

He was born in 1750 in South Carolina and joined the “Standard of Independence” in that state. He became a captain of militiamen in 1776 and in 1778 brought his command to Georgia. The American forces fought against the British and also served in the artillery at St. Augustine, Fla. Dickson rose to the rank of major and according to one source, a colonel. He retired from service in 1781.

Dickson first came to Greene County, Ga., and came to Fayette County in 1826, where he was referred to as “General” Dickson, out of respect for his service. “Many of his descendants stayed in the general area and continue to live in Fayette, Clayton, Henry and surrounding counties,” according to John Lynch, a third great-grandson.

The late Lester Dickson, a great-grandson of David, first discovered the gravesite and had it marked with a stone in 1932. While it sits in Clayton County at this time, it was Fayette County when the Revolutionary veteran was buried.

To drive to the site go to McDonough Road, east of Fayetteville, turn right, cross the Flint River, up a hill and turn right on Turner Road. The gravesite is a short distance on the left on Turner Road. For information call 770-719-7665.
