Police imposter caught in Fayetteville

A Fayetteville man has been arrested for impersonating an officer with a badge stolen from a campus police officer at Fort Valley State University, police said.

Eliseo Medina Harrera, 61, was encountered by officers responding to a dispute Sunday on Hillsdale Drive, said Lt. Beverly Trainor of the Fayetteville Police Department. Harrera had stopped a man who was repossessing a vehicle that belonged to one of Harrera’s family members, Trainor said.

Harrera told the repo man that he was a police officer for Fort Valley State, and he continued that story to Fayetteville officers, Trainor said. But a check with Fort Valley school officials indicated that Harrera was not employed as a police officer, according to warrants for his arrest.

In fact, the badge Harrera displayed had been stolen from a Fort Valley police officer who inadvertently left it on his clothing when it was taken to be dry-cleaned, Trainor added.

Harrera was charged with one felony count of impersonating a police officer. He is free on a $5,000 bond set by Chief Magistrate Charles Floyd.
