Walking in town is topic of meeting

Fayetteville city officials will host a special workshop next Friday designed to help cities make life safer and more convenient for pedestrians.

The net result will be a brainstorming of ideas to help downtown Fayetteville as participants will be put on the streets after learning a host of information during the Walkable Communities Initiative program presented by the Atlanta Regional Commission.

Participants will learn about successful pedestrian design, safety, education, enforcement and encouragement. A walking audit will then be conducted of the downtown area to seek obstacles to walking and suggest potential short-term and long-term solutions.

The ARC is trying to encourage communities to develop “Livable Centers” where people can work and live by walking or biking instead of hopping in their vehicles and commuting. Fayetteville recently won a grant to create a downtown passive use park called the Village Green which would be the centerpiece of more specialty shopping stores with mixed office and residential uses, perhaps in lofts.

Fayetteville officials also hope the Villages at LaFayette, a residential development bordering Fayette County High School, will also encourage persons to live and work in Fayetteville.
