Obituaries

Deward Allen Payton


Deward Allen Payton, 71, Newnan, died Oct. 13, 2003. He was born June 24, 1932 in Coweta County, the son of the late Otis and Clara Smallwood Payton.
He had served in the United States Air Force and was retired from the American Can Company, Newnan.
Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Terry Thompkins officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan.
Survivors include children, Rita Payton Pate, Melinda Payton Grandits, Deward Allen Payton Jr., and Bonnie Payton Welsh; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Spinks.
Memorial donations may be to the Southwest Christian Hospice, 7225 Lester Road, Union City, GA 30291.

James M. McGouirk


James M. McGouirk, 40, Grantville, died Oct. 20, 2003. He was born Sept. 29, 1963, in Newnan, son of the late Robert and Louise Parrott McGouirk. He was a lifelong resident of Coweta County and a member of the First Baptist Church of Grantville. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bobby McGouirk.
Services were at the Claude A. McKibben chapel with the Rev. Ed Wyatt officiating. Interment was at Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, Sharpsburg.
Survivors include a half-sister, Marcia Smith, Newnan; uncles, Ed Parrott, Newnan, and Troy McGouirk, Hazelhurst; and friends Anne and Tony Tucker, LeAnn Tucker, Kyle Tucker, and Greg Townsend, all of Grantville.
Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home, Hogansville, was in charge.

Henry Kalwaic


Henry Kalwaic, 85, Newnan, died Oct. 20, 2003. He was born March 4, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a retired United States Air Force Reserve colonel and a dentist with the Veterans Administration before retiring. He was a master gardener who volunteered with the Coweta County Extension Office. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was a choir member and sang in the Men's Ensemble. He was an active member of the White Oak Golf Association.
Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Gene Tyre officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Kalwaic, Newnan; a daughter, Karen Kalwaic, Las Cruces, N. M.; and a brother, Charles Kalwaic, Coconut Creek, Fla.
McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, was in charge.

Clarence W. Murphy


Clarence W. "Murph" Murphy, 75, Sharpsburg, died Oct. 23, 2003. He was born Dec. 28, 1927 in Fulton County. He was a veteran of the United States Army in World War II. He had been very active for the past four years with the Palmetto Senior Center.
Services were at the Parrott Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Edie Beaujon officiating.
Survivors include a son, Clancy Murphy, Sharpsburg; a daughter, the Rev. Edith Bean Beaujon, Edgewater, N. J.; a sister, Betty Ford, Phoenix, A. Z.; a granddaughter, Kimberly Porter; and great-grandchildren, Cheyene, Coty, and Kelsea.
Parrott Funeral Home, Fairburn, was in charge.

Robert Gordon Sewell


Robert Gordon Sewell, 66, Newnan, died Oct. 23, 2003. He was born Nov. 6, 1936 in Newnan, son of the late Joseph William and Grace Ophelia Daugherty Sewell. He was a printer and had been employed the James River Corporation. His love of woodworking provided him an avocation during his retirement.
Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Floyd Tenney officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Newnan.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Jackson Sewell, Newnan; a son, Steve Sewell, Newnan; a daughter, Jan Sewell, Smyrna; and a sister, Eileen Jackson, Union City.

Norene Thompson Plant


Norene Thompson Plant, 87, Fayetteville, formerly of Grantville, died Oct. 23, 2003. She was born Nov. 4, 1915 in Heard County, daughter of Lonnie and Rose Parham Thompson and lived in Coweta County most of her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie T. Plant, and a great-grandson, William Nichols.
Services were at the Claude A. McKibben chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Boswell officiating. Interment was at the Grantville Cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Bill and Shirley Plant, Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Brenda Nichols Holland and Warren Holland, Fayetteville; a brother, Harvey Thompson, West Point; grandchildren, Dan Nichols, Felicia Nichols, Kevin Nichols, Becky Hausman, and Barbara Townsend; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made in the name of William Nichols to the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children, 1835 Savoy Dr., Suite 316, Atlanta, GA 30341.
