A brief history
of the Peachtree City Library
The Peachtree City Library
was formed by individual citizens of Peachtree City 30 years ago. This
timeline illustrates how the library has changed over the years to become
the place many citizens know today.
1973 - A group of individuals determined to give Peachtree City a library
form the Peachtree City Library Corporation.
1974 - The group raises money and receives a grant from the Flint River
Regional Library System for books. The library was located in the
old municipal building on Ga. Highway 54 and opened with 2,713 books
1975 - The group goes before the Peachtree City Council and asks the city
to take over the library.
1976 - The library becomes a department in the city and the Peachtree
City Library Corporation becomes the group now known as the Friends of
the Library.
1982 - The library moves to the Aberdeen Shopping Center and has 15,000
volumes.
1987 - The library moves to their current location at Willowbend Road.
Library users are asked to check out as many books as possible and then
return them to the new location. The library now has 20,000 volumns and
10,000 square feet of space
1989 - The collection grows to 30,000 volumns.
1993 - The library gets CD-roms and some of their first computers from
a grant from the Flint River Regional Library System.
1995 - The library completes an expansion of 10,000 square feet. The addition
was paid for from the remnants of a SPLOST(special local option sales
tax) passed by Fayette County voters.
1996 - The Peachtree City Library Commission is formed. Their task is
to serve as an advisory board to the city. The Commission promotes and
supports library services.
1997 - The first Internet service is provided through PeachNet and the
first audio books are added.
1999 - The Peachtree City Library loads 63,000 volumes into the PINES
system, the Public Information Netowrk for Electronic Services, which
unites the library with almost every other library in the state.
Since then the library has added more books, periodicals, books on tape,
CDs and videos. They have offered a number of programs to the citizens
of Peachtree City, as well as Fayette County, including computer classes,
summer reading programs, foreign film nights and more. Currently there
are approximately 20,000 library card holders. The library is the
only one in the area that is open seven days weekly.
