Offering women a second look

New, computer-aided detection system improves mammogram readings
SRHS’s Mammography Department is offering women a second opinion in the detection of breast cancer. The department recently purchased Second Look CAD system, or Computer Aided Detection. Southern Regional is one of only four hospitals in the greater Atlanta area to own a CAD system. Computer-Aided Detection serves as a “third eye” for radiologists, while checking for abnormalities in the breast. Second Look can confirm problem areas or identify areas that might otherwise be missed by the human eye.
“Mammography is a common, well-established method for early detection of breast cancer,” said Lisa Jones, mammography manager at Southern Regional. “But, interpretation is often difficult. Getting two radiologists’ opinions on a study is best; but that can quickly add up in time and expenses. With Second Look, we don't have to worry about that. It’s quick, efficient and easy to read.”
Second Look provides an interactive touchscreen to enter patient information; next, the loading system digitizes the patient's film and produces a laser-printed report for review. Any abnormalities are clearly marked by the computer. After reading the mammogram, the radiologist can then use the computer to identify potential areas of concern that may have been overlooked by the human eye.
MediCare and most insurance companies cover computer-aided detection for mammograms. To schedule a mammogram, please call 770-991-8144.
