A clearer picture of your condition

Nuclear camera also offers DVD movies for patients

To bring patients a clear picture of their health, Southern Regional Health System’s Nuclear Medicine Department recently purchased an e.cam Gamma Camera nuclear medicine imaging system — the first of its kind in the Southern Crescent.
Noted as one of the most technologically advanced nuclear cameras available today, the e.cam Gamma camera can adjust to provide direct imaging of ambulatory, pediatric, wheelchair and gurney patients, while giving the best view possible of a patient’s medical condition. The camera also allows patients to view DVD movies on a separate screen while they are being examined.
“With its unique combination of image quality, patient versatility and unsurpassed functionality,” said Dr. Balu Mani, chair of diagnostic imaging at Southern Regional. “We expect our new e.cam camera to significantly reduce examination time while improving patient outcomes.”
“We are very excited about the addition of the e.cam to Nuclear Medicine,” said Ingrid Hall, manager of nuclear medicine at Southern Regional. “Its flexibility can accommodate each patient and it reduces patient set-up time.”
The e.cam system is ideal for the early detection and staging of cancer, heart disease and other disorders. The camera can examine body organs and tissues at a molecular level and is able to detect problems well before they are large enough to be identified by other means, such as an X-ray.
The e.cam Gamma’s design allows easy access for those who are sitting or standing between its detectors. Special infrared sensors on the detector surfaces automatically bring the detectors as close to the patient as possible enhancing whole body imaging.
The Nuclear Medicine Department works with almost all of the patient-care departments throughout the hospital — including cardiology, radiology, dialysis and surgery. Already, the e.cam Gamma is helping with:
• Thyroid tests.
• Bone scans for bone and joint diseases.
• Stress tests.
• Checkups on organ transplant recipients.
• Cancer diagnosis and testing.
• Detecting an infection site.
Southern Regional Health System offers comprehensive health resources, including: Southern Regional Medical Center, a 406-bed, full-service hospital in Riverdale, featuring a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center; The Women’s Life Center; a Diabetes Resource Center; and one of the busiest emergency departments in the state. Southern Regional also provides mental health, home health care, substance abuse treatment and surgery efforts through RiverWoods, Southern Regional Psychiatric Center; Southern Regional Homecare; and the Surgery Center at Mount Zion, located in Morrow, Georgia.
