Indians win big in band competition

Congratulations to the East Coweta Marching Indians on winning the Grand Championship at the United States Scholastic Band Association’s competition last weekend at South Gwinnett High School.

Under the direction of band director Robert Owens, the Marching Indians received Superior ratings in all categories with the band and color guard placing first in class, the percussion receiving second place in class, and the drum majors receiving 3rd place in class. The band received the highest score of the day, putting them in first place out of all 20 bands at the competition.

The band has put in numerous hours of practice in preparing for competition season and it has paid off with this Grand Champion Award. The senior class members of the band, most of whom have been in the band for the past four years, were overwhelmed with pride as they saw all of their hard work pay off.

“Tears of joy were flowing from students, staff, parents, and alumni alike as the winner was

announced,” said senior president Melissa Burchfield. “I am so proud of the band, our hard work and dedication has paid off in what will be one of the most memorable events of my life.”

During the excitement of Saturday’s win, drum major Jillian Arnett made the statement, “The Purple got the Gold!” Arnett also wanted the band to know how proud she was of their hard work.

“We knew we were up against some pretty tough bands, and it was all we could do to hold our breath while the announcer read out, ‘Gold Division Grand Champions,’” said assistant drum major Davis Adams.

The band could not have achieved their goal of Grand Champion if it had not been for all of the help from Owens, assistant band director Joel Satterfield, color guard instructor Teddy Sullivan, Percussion Instructor Jay Bumgardner, music secretary Mary Collins, and all of the moral support from the East Coweta Band Boosters.

The pride of the East Coweta Marching Indians has never been more apparent than now.
