County nixes idea of daycare center on Rockaway Road

Busy commuters on Rockaway Road won't have to face the added worry of a daycare center on one of eastern Coweta County's busiest roads.

The County Commission unanimously denied a conditional use permit for a center on a five-acre tract on Rockaway Road.

Developer Donavan Gossett said he wanted to open the center because it had always been his family’s plan to build a center so local kids would have someplace to stay. He said the center would eventually have 150 kids, plus staff.

Gossett’s proposal was turned down by the county's Board of Zoning Appeals and planner Lynette Wright also recommended the County Commission turn it down.

“There are no businesses in and around this residential area located outside the city limits of Senoia,” she said.

Several Rockaway Road residents also voiced their opposition to the center.

“I’ve lived there since 1988, and I just don’t want to see it there,” said Mark Willis.

Commissioner Vernon “Mutt” Hunter agreed with the residents.

“I would be very reluctant to approve anything that increases traffic on that road,” he said.

The commission voted unanimously to deny Gossett’s request.
