Peachtree City Notebook

Feedback sought on no-smoking ordinance
The Peachtree City Council is seeking public comment on a proposed ordinance by the Fayette County Board of Health that would prohibit smoking in all places of business and employment, including restaurants and bars. The proposal was presented to the council for consideration at its Oct. 2 meeting.
An electronic form has been posted on the city’s Web site so residents can quickly and easily express their views on the ordinance, which as proposed would be the strictest in the state and one of the toughest in the nation.
Peachtree City for several years has prohibited smoking in all government buildings, and requires that public places (restaurants and other businesses open to the public) post a sign indicating whether tobacco smoke is present or not.
Because the Board of Health has no governing authority and acts simply as an advisory panel, its only hope of getting a no-smoking ban implemented countywide is for each of the jurisidictions — the five cities and county commission — to sign off individually on the proposal.
The school system already has a zero-tolerance policy toward tobacco.
The question on the Web site form asks, “Should the city enact an ordinance prohibiting smoking in all public places and places of employment in Peachtree City?”
The city Web site is located at www.peachtree-city.org.
Any volunteers for vacancies?
Peachtree City officials are making the plea to anyone willing to volunteer for a seat on one of the city’s commissions or authorities. Applications are being accepted for the following posts. Nominees will be considered and must be approved by the City Council:
• One seat on the Airport Authority.
• One seat on the Recreation Commission.
• One seat on the Water & Sewerage Authority.
• Positions for two unexpired terms on the Development Authority.
Nomination deadline for applying to the positions is Friday, Nov. 7 by 5 p.m. Applicants must have lived in Peachtree City for at least six months. Applications can be filed at City Hall, 151 Willowbend Road.
The regular terms begin Jan. 1, 2004, and all positions are volunteer nonpaying. Call Gloria Reid at 770- 487-7657 for more information.

Halloween is Oct. 31 in PTC
Have no additional fear, Peachtree City officials assure residents: Halloween is Oct. 31 this year, as it is every year.
“The city does not change the date for Trick-or-Treating” advises an announcement on the city’s Web site, unlike some municipalities that have tried to change the date when kids swarm into the streets, most often for safety or religious concerns.
Meanwhile, the Peachtree City Volunteer Firefighter’s Association pumpkin sale continues through Halloween at Weber Station (482 Peachtree Parkway South) and Leach Station (110 Paschall Road). Proceeds will help the PCVFA toward the purchase of uniforms and equipment and provide training to better serve the public.

Fire Station a very scary place

The Peachtree City Fire Department will sponsor a Haunted House this Friday and Saturday from 6-11 p. m. at Leach Station (110 Paschall Road off Highway 74 South, just past The Avenue). Admission is $5 per person (advanced tickets available at Leach Station for $4 per person). Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Due to graphic nature of some scenes, parental discretion is advised. All proceeds generated will go toward the purchase of emergency/rescue equipment and uniforms, along with providing the professional training of firefighters/EMS personnel. Please come and help support your local Fire Department.
