McIntosh theater students stage world premiere of ‘Spaz!’

The McIntosh High School Advanced Drama class has been granted the world-premiere production rights to up-and-coming playwright Bradley Hayward’s newest work, “Spaz!”
This week’s premiere of the hilarious new work is also the debut of Michelle Stone as the director of McIntosh High’s theater program.
“Spaz!” will be taken to regional competition in November and is the story of a girl named Janet on her 16th birthday.
“She encounters crazy teachers, a family that puts the ‘fun’ in dysfunctional, a hot-tempered driving examiner, and a mortician who’s chosen the right profession,” according to information on the show.
In tandem with the performance of “Spaz!”, the Advanced Drama class is presenting “The Halloween Project.” Unlike anything done by MHS before, “The Halloween Project” will also be making its world-premiere as an entirely student-led production.
Under the direction of classmate Danny Madden, the students have written a series of short plays designed to give you chills and make your heart race. Cindy, the €rst in the series, asks, “What if something designed to give us pleasure, like our childhood dolls, served a more sinister purpose?” The next play in the series is an adaptation of the classic Edgar Allen Poe thriller “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Finally, the project concludes with the frightening tale of Mr. Jack, loosely based on the legend of Jack the Ripper.
Keeping with the Halloween theme, there will be a haunted hallway for the audience to experience between shows.
“Spaz!” and “The Halloween Project” are suitable for all ages, though smaller children may €nd latter too scary. Both productions will be presented on Thursday and Saturday, Oct.23 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee-only presentation of “Spaz!” will be offered on Sunday at 2 p.m. Doors will open one-half hour before performance. Tickets are available at the door and in advance from the students of Advanced Drama. Adult admission is $7 and student admission is $5. Call the school at 770-613-3232 for more information.
