A Fayetteville man died Friday
morning after his SUV rolled over on Ga. Highway 85 south at Harp Road
in an auto collision.
Richard Helmbold, 63, was severely injured in the collision, police said.
He died at Fayette Community Hospital, but two passengers in his 2002
Chevy Tahoe survived with non-life threatening injuries: Howard Eugene
Belcher, 63, and Joe Belcher, 58, both of Fayetteville.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. when Robin Mazer, 48, of
Fayetteville tried to cross the highway after stopping at the stop sign.
The front of her 1999 Nissan Altima struck the left side of the Tahoe,
causing the vehicle to lose control and roll over several times, police
said.
Mazer suffered minor injuries; all involved in the accident were wearing
their seat belts, police said.
Charges are pending. The investigation is being conducted by the Fayette
County Sheriffs Department.
There is no indication drugs or alcohol were involved in the case, deputies
said.
The road was closed and traffic was re-routed for two hours while the
crash scene was investigated.
