Greg Miller battled cancer throughout high school. This year, as he entered his senior year, he relapsed and last Thursday he passed away.
As he was a member of the Fayette County High School band all four years, his colleagues plan to honor him by dedicating their senior night performance this Friday to him.

Miller moved to the area with his family in the seventh grade from Buffalo, N.Y. He attended Fayette Middle School and joined the band, playing the alto saxophone. Miller was also a member of the Beta Club in middle school.
He continued playing in the band when he went to high school and was part of the band’s trip to Sydney, Australia, for the 2000 Olympics. Miller attended band camp this summer, knowing he was having a relapse, but was unable to march his spot this year.
“Greg really wanted to march this year,” said Band Director Kenny Beard. “He wasn’t able to, but not because he wasn’t willing to try.”
The band has kept Miller’s spot open this year and will not put anyone in it.
In addition to his participation with the band, Miller was a member of a local bowling league and was very active in the Providence Missionary Baptist Chuch youth group. He was vice president of the youth group and also won the group’s Youth of the Year Award.
There will be a Homecoming Celebration today at noon at the church, 2295 Benjamin E. Mays Dr., Atlanta.
The band’s performance will come at halftime of Fayette County’s home game against Riverdale this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Brain Tumor Foundation for Children, 1835 Savoy Dr., Suite 316, Atlanta, Ga. 30341.
